Newsdays Transforms Subway Design with Innovative Artistic Techniques

Newsdays drew inspiration from the characteristics of Qingdao's century-old urbanization and industrialization. The design elements of the subway space were reshaped and integrated, using abstract art techniques and bold colors to reflect the city's architecture, industrial development, and natural beauty. The result is a subway line that not only serves as a vital transportation artery but also as a showcase of the city's spirit and cultural temperament.

What sets Qingdao Line 1 apart from other subway designs is its unique properties. The theme of "Beautiful Qingdao" is displayed throughout the subway, allowing passengers to enjoy public art as a part of their daily commute. This integration of art and public transportation is a symbol of modern city civilization progress.

The design was realized using a variety of techniques, including glazed mosaic, ceramic splicing, and metal glaze plate splicing. These techniques elevated the design of color and space to a higher artistic level. The lighting design follows the concept of "seeing the light but not the light", creating a visually pleasing environment for passengers. The guide sign system was designed to help passengers enter and exit the station quickly and efficiently, further improving the station's visual appeal.

The design project, which started in April 2017 and finished in December 2021, was a massive undertaking. Qingdao Metro Line 1 is the longest line in the planning of Qingdao Metro, connecting Chengyang District, the old city, and the West Coast New District. Despite the challenges, Newsdays successfully implemented the concept of "subway station space integrated design", improving the quality of subway space and operation services.

The design of Qingdao Line 1 has been recognized for its innovation and excellence. It was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and Qingdao Line 1 certainly fits the bill.
